Why being environmentally sound matters to you

You know you can make a positive impact on the environment by recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. But what do you do with used print cartridges? Whether you’re at work or at home, HP has answers for you.

  What is it?

HP’s Planet Partners program, available in over 40 countries, is a free and easy way to return your empty HP inkjet and LaserJet print cartridges for recycling. HP includes pre-addressed, postage paid recycling envelopes and labels with many Original HP print cartridges.

  How does it work?

HP takes returned supplies and sorts, shreds and separates them into plastics, metals and other components such as ink, foam and composite parts. These items are then used to make automotive parts, microchip processing trays, serving trays, spools and other useful products. Any remaining materials are used to generate energy or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

It’s important to note, HP does not refill or remanufacture any HP print cartridges returned for recycling. And no HP print cartridges returned through the HP Planet Partners program are sent to landfills.

  What are the results?

In 2006, HP recycled more than 30 million pounds of print cartridges. Since the program began in 1991, more than 143 million HP print cartridges have been returned and recycled worldwide. That’s nearly 260 million pounds.

HP designs with the environment in mind

HP designs with the environment in mind HP takes into account environmental considerations at every step of a product’s life cycle.

  Print Cartridges

HP believes that the environmental performance of products begins at the design stage, so we design print cartridges that use fewer materials, use them more efficiently and utilize new materials that have less environmental impact. With our inkjet and LaserJet print cartridges, this includes:

  • “Snap Cap” makes the HP 80 cartridge 25% more recyclable
  • HP LaserJet print cartridge packaging contains 30 – 85% post consumer recycled content
  • Redesigned multi-packs are made with 60% less material
  • HP inkjet print cartridge boxes contain up to 80% recycled content
  • More than 53% fewer parts in monochrome LaserJet cartridges since 1992

  Paper

Original HP papers are designed with respect for the environment:

  • HP Office Recycled and HP Digital Copy Recycled papers plus HP Felt Textured Greeting Card / Ivory paperbase contain 30% post consumer recycled content paper fiber
  • All uncoated small format office paper (except brochures), greeting cards, glossy paper, and photo paper do NOT contain virgin wood fibers derived from old-growth forests
  • All HP transparencies contain 45% recycled content

  Packaging

When it comes to designing product packaging with the environment in mind, HP looks beyond the box. For instance, a new package made with less material does more than reduce the amount of waste that’s disposed; it takes up less room during shipping. This means more print cartridges can be transported per shipment — reducing the amount of fuel used and greenhouse gases produced by delivery trucks.

A redesigned multi-pack made with just 60% less material can more than triple transportation efficiency.
