Iain Liddell Iain Liddell took charge of Brunel University's published information in 1993, and immediately saw the need to address the massive volume of disparate word-processing documents. In 2003, he worked with the university's Records Manager on a nationally-funded review of the management of electronic information (including Web pages) relating to student progression. By this stage he was already codifying Brunel's policies and procedures for information management.

More recently, as Policy Development Manager, Iain has taken an active role in defining the use of two major management tools for a university environment that counts more than 130 languages amongst its members: an anti-spam appliance and the HP Integrated Archive Platform. His specialism is in the optimum exploitation of technology while maintaining the integrity of access required by a public authority. He has also pioneered the setting of policies and procedures for third-party access to information stored in the archive platform and similar databanks.

Case Study

Meeting the University challenge
Overview
Brunel University is one of UK's top education institutions, with over 14,000 students and an enviable academic record.
Challenge
To comply with UK's Freedom of Information Act, resolve student disputes on progression and demonstrate public sector standards of accountability.
Solution
Brunel University selected the HP Integrated Archive Platform at the heart of a secure and tamper-proof E-Discovery solution that would meet all objectives.
Results
Search times have dramatically reduced while search accuracy has improved. Administration overheads have also reduced, and the Brunel 'brand' is protected against information loss or misuse.
