Virtual Connect architecture

A wired-once, virtualised architecture providing ultimate server flexibility while eliminating time-intensive management processes.

What it means

Utilising an integrated design, HPs Virtual Connect Architecture only has to be wired once for easy set-up and expandability. LAN/SAN settings are determined up front, so no matter how often things change, you can make the most of your time and resources. Benefits include:

  • Speed Add, remove and recover servers without wasting days or weeks coordinating LAN and SAN connections.
  • Flexibility Move resources around as necessary to meet the needs of any given moment.
  • Complexity Simplify cabling by up to 94% without requiring added switches

How it works

HP Virtual Connect Architecture modules feature a five-terabyte midplane with eight high-performance interconnect bays in back, full redundancy and the potential to deliver 80GB/sec through each bay.

LAN and SAN connections are available to a pool of up to 64 servers, allowing you to define a server's I/O connections and then independently manage blade servers and their connectivity.

Connections and configurations between server blades and the LAN and SAN can then be deployed at the click of a button, and migrated to another server bay instantly all without disturbing the LAN or the SAN settings or administrators.

Thermal Logic technology

Built-in thermal management capabilities and controls to help you maximise system performance without exceeding your power and cooling capacity.

What it means

Thermal Logic Technology actively monitors and automatically adapts to your changing needs. With Thermal Logic you get:

  • Insight A graphic thermal dashboard gives you an instant snapshot of the power consumption, heat output and cooling capacity of your environment.
  • Efficiency Constantly assesses your system temperature and responds quickly to redirect air where its needed most.
  • Control Gain the unique ability to balance performance, power and cooling, according to the task at hand.
  • Cost Savings Enjoy power savings of up to 40 percent or more versus rack-mount servers.* No component or application ever uses more power or cooling than required.

How it works

Embedded sensor monitoring

Hundreds of embedded sensors assess system temperature and respond quickly to redirect air where its needed most.

HP Active cool fans

This evolutionary design, inspired by jet engine technology, pushes air further into the blade chassis, consumes one-third less power and is roughly half as quiet as traditional server fans.

Multi-zone architecture

Fans located in each of four zones provide direct cooling for blades in that zone, and redundant cooling for all others.

HP Dynamic power saver

Pools power distribution to maintain system performance at higher application loads, to provide power savings at lower application loads, and to shift power load for maximum efficiency and reliability based on demand.

The HP Power regulator

Works at the processor level to more closely match the processor power consumption to the workload.

Insight Control management

A secure, integrated operating environment that allows you to manage and monitor your infrastructure while helping to analyse future needs.

What it means

Your data centre is about to get a whole lot smarter. Insight Control Management is the brains behind the HP BladeSystem and the key to mastering control over your infrastructure. Right out of the box youll notice the difference:

  • Speed Complete many common tasks in 1/10 to 1/100 of the time. For example, set up 64 server blades in 15 minutes.
  • Cost Savings A 200:1 device-to-administrator ratio means resources can be refocused on growing the business.
  • Simplification All systems-management intervention is governed via a single console

How it works

Onboard administrator

Management module reduces setup time for a single enclosure of blades by enabling you to configure and manage server, storage, network and power settings locally through an industry-first interactive LCD panel, or remotely through an easy-to-use web interface.

Insight Control software

Integrated systems-management portfolio designed to let you provision, monitor, update, virtualise and migrate the HP BladeSystem across multiple enclosures, even multiple data centres.

Lights-out 2 (iLO2)

Management processor within each blade server delivers total control irrespective of OS state through virtual KVM for remote administration, virtual media for remote, single server deployment and software updates, and remote power control.
