Prof. Ian Angell

His growing reputation comes as the culmination of twenty years work developing a new perspective on information
systems, stressing that the social, economic and organizational issues are more important than the technological
ones: even the very best investment in new technology can be a source of commercial risk, if the societal aspects
are not managed properly. This alternative position is having wide-ranging repercussions both in educational and
business circles in the UK and increasingly abroad. In particular he emphasizes that even the very best software
and investment in the Internet will be a total waste and the cause commercial risks if the complexity caused by
societal aspects are not managed properly.
Professor Angell acts as a consultant on the management, security and strategic impact of information systems,
to many national and international organizations and to a number of governments and the EU. Until 2000 he was a
personal advisor to the Cabinet of the Director General of UNESCO (Federico Mayor), and he has consulted for the
Russian Ministry of Science on the impact of IT on employment. In January 1998 he was invited to present his ideas
to the Malaysian National IT Council and had private meetings with both the Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir
Mohamad and the (now ex-) Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He has also come to the attention of some very
senior international businessmen and politicians who have invited him for private discussions about his ideas.
In May 2003 he was asked to hold number of private advisory sessions with three of the sons of Sheikh Mohammed
Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The CEO of Warner-Lambert once wrote to him saying that, because of a
presentation he had made to W-L senior executives in Orlando, the company was changing its whole approach to
Internet business.
He presented his ideas before the Parliamentary IT Committee at the Palace of Westminster to a cross-party
group from both Lords and Commons, and they were "profoundly disturbed" and "
visibly shaken" by his forecasts. He was nevertheless invited to be the first to give evidence to
the House of Lords Select Committee on e-commerce in Europe, where he "managed to knock the
gyroscope over."
Undoubtedly it is Angell’s radical and controversial views on the global consequences of IT that
has brought him such a high-profile reputation as a ‘futurologist’ in business circles and in the media.
January 2000 saw the publication of his book The New Barbarian Manifesto, in which he lays out his
advice on how to win in an increasingly complex, brutal and brutish world. This book is having an
impact worldwide (it is already translated into Chinese and Korean), and even reached number 5 in the
Amazon.com best-sellers list in Brazil! In April 2000 he undertook a media tour of the United States to
promote his book, with TV and radio interviews in New York, Yonkers, Washington, Chicago, Seattle, Olympia,
Dallas and Fort Worth.

Alan Banks
VP Sales, Software UK&I
Alan Banks is the Director of Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) UK Software business which includes Business
Technology Optimisation (BTO), Information Management (IM), Neoview and OpenCall. In this role, Alan
Banks co-ordinates and oversees distribution, sales, channel programmes and marketing in the UK. Alan’s
focus will be to maintain growth within the software business by identifying new revenue streams in the UK software
market.
Prior to taking on this current role, Alan worked for SAP as Vice President in EMEA for Large Enterprise - managing
over 50% of SAP’s business, outside Germany. Before this, Alan spent a number of years in the security,
governance and optimisation industry with Computer Associates (CA), where his role as Senior Vice President and
General Manager for Northern Europe gave him the opportunity to turn round a failing business from declining
revenue to one of their highest growth teams worldwide. His innovative approach covered new business planning
processes, a new EMEA operational model, a different go-to-market strategy and the verticalisation of sales
functions.
Alan has also held a number of key roles within the IT industry at BEA Systems (enterprise infrastructure software),
ATG (e-commerce), Documentum and Kinesis (both document management software/consulting).
Alan holds a BSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from John Moore’s University and is married with two boys.

Andy Isherwood

Andy Isherwood, who has been with HP for more than 19 years, is vice president of the combined support
and professional services organization for HP’s worldwide software organization. He is charged
with leading a transformation to leverage the link between support and services, while forging a closer
partnership with HP Services to ensure we have the best possible customer experience when using HP software.
Ensuring the highest possible customer satisfaction is the number one priority.
Prior to this role Andy was vice president and general manager for the software business in EMEA where he led a highly successful team in driving revenue, growth and profitability. As a key part of this job, he integrated the businesses of both Peregrine and Mercury. Prior to this, Andy managed HP’s enterprise business in EMEA responsible for the sales of HP products and services into HP’s top 5,000 accounts.
Andy has previously held a number of key U.K. and European roles including U.K. Sales Director, U.K. Channel Manager, European Channel Sales and Marketing Manager, European Alliances General Manager and a number of sales management roles in the U.K.
He holds a degree in Business Studies from the University of London and is a member of the Institute of Marketing. He is also a non-executive director of two companies.

Mike has been with CSC for 31 years and has focused on technical consulting. His areas of experience cover the spectrum of the skills necessary for large-scale architecture such as networks and telecommunications, database management, development, testing, languages, operating systems, and hardware and disk subsystems.
His business experience includes banking, healthcare, manufacturing, software, distribution, US federal tax processing, telephone and telecommunications, railroads, healthcare, banking, credit, financial services, defense, insurance, and electric & gas utilities. Prior to joining the NHS programme in the UK as CTO he managed CSC’s Performance Engineering Practice that specializes in performance across all facets of the life cycle from predictive modeling to diagnosis of system problems.
Mike’s focus in these industries and technologies has been as an architect for solutions such as continuous operations, high-performance application implementations, the interoperation of various systems, and the migration of legacy systems to modern environments. He spent many years in performance engineering, system tuning, and capacity planning, and is an expert in database technologies.

Paul Coby

How IT can be deployed to help cut costs, nurture innovation and improve customer service.
Paul Coby, CIO of British Airways, is the BA Director responsible for IT and IT-enabled business change.
He is a member of Willie Walsh’s, Leadership Team. Paul’s business principle is – ‘there
are no IT projects, only business projects’.
Paul joined the Civil Service in 1978 and held several senior civil service positions, including Private Secretary
to the Secretary of State for Transport. Paul was asked to join British Airways in 1997. He masterminded the move
of BA’s Reservations, Inventory and Departure Control systems to Amadeus, as “Community” functions
and in September 2001 joined Rod Eddington’s Leadership team as CIO, responsible for all BA Group IT.
Over the last seven years, despite enormous increases in processing storage and network power, he has reduced the cost
of running BA’s IT operation by 45%, enabling the Airline’s investment in industry revolutionising ‘customer
and employee enabled’ systems to increase by 55%. Indeed the Business Plan for 2008/2009 has total investment in IT at a
higher level than the cost of running the existing IT for the first time. BA’s successful IT investments include the award
winning ba.com with on-line check-in; and Employee Self Service, which has made the internet the principal way of doing business
for both BA customers and employees. Paul has established the IT and Business Change team within the IT Department to bridge the
gap between technology and business transformation, using Lean techniques.
In October 2006, BA’s Im department was awarded Computing Magazine’s top Award for 2006 for Major Contribution to
UK IT, and Paul won the UK CIO Innovator of the Year Award in March 2007. In June 2007, Paul was also named the UK's top CIO on
silicon.com’s CIO50 list of the 50 most influential and innovative IT leaders in the UK. In 2008 he received, on behalf of
Willie Walsh, the premier Indian NASSCOM IT industry award for IT Enabled Business Transformation.
Outside work Paul’s primary interest is his family, but he also tries to make time for a little skiing, the
development of a database of Roman forts and military units in the first Century AD, and his interest in pre-1914
railways in Britain and Germany. Since his time teaching at a School in Kenya, Paul has been interested in Opera,
but also World music, and is a devotee of the WOMAD Festivals in the UK and around the world.
In 2003, Paul became Chairman of the SITA Board. SITA is owned by the Air Transport Community and provides
network services and IT solutions in 220 countries across the world. In 2006 Paul led the restructuring of SITA
into a single entity for its customers – ‘oneSITA’. SITA has an annual turnover of cUS$1.5
billion. Paul is also on the Board of On-Air, the SITA/Airbus Joint Venture, which provides on-board voice
and data connectivity.
In 2006, Paul also became Chairman of the eSkills UK CIO Board. eSkills UK is working with employees,
educators and government to transform IT skills at all levels and ages in the UK economy and society; so
that the UK will be able to derive maximum benefit from the power of technology to transform business
competitiveness and productivity.

How BT has revolutionised testing to focus on the End to End Customer Experience
Victoria Pearson is the Director of End to End Testing at British Telecom plc (BT). Upon joining the organisation in 2005 she commenced the consolidation of a huge testing organization, with the aim of improving and standardising testing practice in order to establish a Testing Centre of Excellence. Thereby allowing BT’s products and services to go live faster and with known confidence, while reducing the overall cost of testing and focusing on testing the Customer Experience. The Testing Centre of Excellence is now well established, with a successful model in place for offshore test execution. Victoria has also been responsible for the selection and introduction of HP’s Software-as-a-Service, providing Quality Center and Performance Centre.
Prior to joining BT, Victoria was Head of Global Investment Banking Testing Centre of Excellence at HSBC, with responsibility for testing across local, global and offshore locations, including management of all testing services such as test management and consultancy, test process development, the introduction of testing tools - Quality Center and Performance Center global tool set, and specialised performance testing and test automation service groups, as well as test environment management, test strategy, planning and execution. Whilst in this role she introduced a successful resourcing model for offshore testing, which is now being implemented, with reduced testing costs but with maintained quality for the Investment Bank.
Before joining HSBC, Victoria held a number of test leadership positions with organizations such as Cellnet, British Gas and CSC
Victoria’s industry experience is predominantly in investment banking (11 years) and telecommunications (6 years).

Gary Barr

Delivering Positive Business Outcomes Through IT Transformation
Heading up a team of 270 permanent members of staff, Gary is responsible for the overall running of Morrisons’ IT infrastructure, across retail, manufacturing and distribution.
Gary has been in his current role for 18 months. During this time, he and his team have successfully completed a programme to refresh the company’s entire IT infrastructure. This remains Morrisons’ single biggest IT transformation programme to date.
Prior to joining Morrisons, he was the IT Director at the National Blood Service where he successfully managed the integration of the Service’s regional IT framework into a centrally controlled national service.
Gary graduated from Teesside University in 1987 with a BA hons degree in Business Studies.
Happily married for 20 years, Gary spends most of his spare time with his family, supporting his 11 year-old daughter’s passion for horse riding.
