Joschka Fischer

Former German Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor
Joschka FischerJoschka Fischer served as Germany’s Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor from 1998 to 2005. Throughout his seven-year tenure as Foreign Minister and the leading figure of the German Green Party, Joschka Fischer was arguably the most popular politician in his nation. From 2006 to 2007 Joschka Fischer held a professorship at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Since 2008, he has been employed with the Albright Group, a Washington, DC, consulting firm led by Madeleine Albright.

Joseph (Joschka) Martin Fischer was closely engaged in the 1968 student movement. Although he never enrolled as a student he attended lectures of Adorno, Habermas and Negt, and pursued a number of social political studies.

He eventually joined the German Green party and became next to Otto Schily one of the party’s spokesman. In 1983 he was elected Member of Parliament for the first time, and became Minister for Environmental Affairs in the Parliament of Hessen in 1985. After the Green Party was re-elected into the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) in 1994 he became their official spokesman.

In 1998 the Social Democratic Party (SPD) formed a coalition with the Green Party and Fischer became German Secretary of State. He very quickly learnt the rules of international diplomacy, and swiftly became a respected statesman worldwide. Being an experienced tactician he immediately had to deal with the most delicate problems, i.e. war in Kosovo, conflict in the Middle East and the German-American relationship. He resolved those issues within the government as well within his party. Even though members of the opposition were trying to discredit his reputation because of his past as a ‚street fighter’, Joschka Fischer was the most popular politician in Germany for several consecutive years. It was much to his engagement during the campaign that the coalition was re-elected in 2002 and could continue working until 2005. He then resigned as Foreign Minister and party leader.
